Travelling across the West coast and its mining in

Travelling across the West coast and its mining industrial landscapes, the South-African photographer Jo Ractliffe recalls Rob Nixon’s concept of “slow violence”: “a violence that occurs gradually and out of sight, a violence of delayed destruction that is dispersed across time and space, an attritional violence that is typically not viewed as violence at all.”

En voyageant à travers la côte ouest et ses paysages d’industrie minière, la photographe sud-africaine Jo Ractliffe se rappelle du concept de « violence lente » de Rob Nixon : « une violence qui opère de manière graduelle et invisible, une violence de destruction insidieuse qui s’étend à travers le temps et l’espace, une violence d’usure qui n’est habituellement pas perçue comme de la violence. »

Jo Ractliffe’s photographies depict broken territories slowly ruined by human activity. Driving all the way from Cape Town to the Namibian border, she interrogates the concept of landscape by documenting the devastated land of her childhood.
Jo Ractliffe is the co-winner of the Prix Virginia 2024.
